From Sunday 8th June, the athletics track at Saughton Sports Complex will close for a major refurbishment project, with works, under management by Edinburgh Leisure, expected to continue until September.

During the closure period, club sessions will continue at alternative locations. At least initially, squads will meet at their Winter Training Venues: Forrester High School on Tuesdays, and Craigmount High School on Thursdays.

Club members should check the WhatsApp Community regularly for the latest updates, training locations, and any last-minute changes.

While weโ€™ll definitely miss our home track over the summer, the refurbishment is exciting news for the club and for athletics in Edinburgh. The upgrade will help ensure Saughton continues to provide a high-quality facility for training, competition, and community sport for years to come.

Saughton has been at the heart of athletics in west Edinburgh for decades. Generations of runners, jumpers, throwers, framerunners, jogglers, coaches, and volunteers have trained there through rain, wind, sunshine, and the occasional sideways hailstorm. It has hosted everything from junior league matches and school competitions to club sessions, PB attempts, and countless hard reps on dark winter nights.

Looking back through the archives, CAAC Summer Training moved to Saughton in 1990, as documented in this CAAC history, written by Coach Moray in 2006. Going back further, this record book published by Scottish Athletics lists Discus records being set when Saughton hosted the Scottish Championships as far back as the 1950โ€™s! (note that the tartan track is not thought to have been built at this time)

The venue remains one of Edinburghโ€™s key outdoor athletics facilities, with a full 400m track and field event areas serving clubs and athletes from across the city. Although the temporary closure will require some flexibility, it also gives us a chance to explore new training locations, mix up sessions, and make the most of lighter summer evenings.

We know changing routines can be disruptive, but weโ€™re looking forward to returning to an improved facility later in the year, with a refreshed track and better training environment for everyone.

Thanks to all members for their flexibility and support during the refurbishment period. See you at training this summer!
