For all athletes training at Saughton, this page gives a quick reminder of some basic track etiquette that will help everyone get the most out of their sessions.

CAAC’s track sessions bring together juniors and adults, sprinters and endurance runners, frame runners, and athletes using the jumps and throws areas. We all need to share the space and look out for each other.

The Basics:

  • Be aware of your surroundings. Before starting an effort or moving across the track check who is around you.
  • Listen to your coach. Coaches will organise sessions to make the best use of the available space. Please follow their instructions.
  • Keep the track clear when you’re not running. Move to the side rather than standing in lanes or on the finish line.
  • Look before crossing the track. Never assume a lane is clear, particularly when athletes are sprinting.
  • Give faster runners space. If someone is catching you during an effort, hold your line and allow them to pass safely.
  • Don’t suddenly stop on the track. Complete your effort and move safely to the side.
  • Use the correct lanes for your session. Your coach will advise where you should run.
  • Be particularly careful around the jumps and throws areas. Follow coaches’ instructions and never cross a throwing area or run across the runway while an athlete is preparing to jump or throw.

Different athletes, one track

A sprint session can look very different from an endurance session. A frame runner may need more space and time to move safely, while jumps and throws require athletes to use areas that cross or sit alongside the track.

Please don’t assume that your session takes priority over someone else’s. Give other athletes time and space, communicate clearly and be prepared to adjust where necessary.

Most importantly, look out for each other. A little awareness and courtesy makes Saughton a safer and more enjoyable place for everyone.

Thanks for helping CAAC make the most of our shared training space.
