Friday 28th November 2025 saw the latest CAAC quiz night, held at the Corstorphine Cougars RFC club house. Thanks to everyone who came along and made the night such a success, and especially to Janet Grigor and Tom Gallahue for leading the organisation on the night.

For those of you who weren’t able to join us, we’ve sprinkled a few of the quiz questions in this write up to test your knowledge!

Quizmaster Stuart Fenwick was in top form, keeping the rabble under control through a lively mix of music, picture, general knowledge, and ‘double-or-bust’ rounds. And in a world of AI chatbots, Stuart made sure it was a fair game. Speaking of which:

In poker, what is the name of a hand which contains an ace, king, queen, jack, and ten all in the same suit?

Generous prize donations helped the raffle raise over £100 for the club. Swiss chocolates, French wines, Scottish whisky and even a bunch of Ecuadorian bananas (reserved for the ‘wooden spoon’ team!) With such international flavours, this question was particularly fitting:

Of all of the countries beginning with the letter ‘A’, which 5 have the largest populations?

The team names were a quality display of wit (“Run like the Wind-ed”), CAAC puns (“Is that a CAAC or a cake?”), and a few that can’t be printed here!

Ironically, the quickest team to hand in their answer sheets each round were the “Better late than never” group. Luckily the bar stayed open all evening, since a couple of quizzers arrived late due to traffic, victims of Edinburgh’s 20mph speed restrictions. Putting those aside, it got quizmaster Stuart thinking about a hypothetical:

True or False: Travelling at a constant 70mph along a straight road to the sun, the journey would take less than 10 years.

The winning team, with 53 points, was “Please No Music Round!”, led by Martin Caldwell. The next two teams were trailing on 48 apiece, until Graeme Fletcher propelled his table into silver with his expertise of Madonna’s cover of American Pie. And whilst there were no medals for taking part, this individual tie-breaker question left many in the room more impressed with the sporting calibre of the land of the Brussels Sprout:

How many Olympic medals has Belgium won since the first modern Games in 1896?

1st Place!
2nd Place!

Yet, as the night drew to a close, teams stepped out into the chilly moonlit night, still mulling over this ‘double-or-bust’ question:

In our solar system, which is the closest planet to the sun to have a moon?

3rd Place!
